Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich to captain Germany after several veterans withdraw
Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has been named captain of the Germany national team following the withdrawals of Ilkay Gundogan , Manuel Neuer , Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos from the Mannschaft .
The 29-year-old midfielder takes up the armband after 91 caps for Germany , with his debut coming under Joachim Low in a 3-1 win against Slovakia in 2016.
Kimmich will be supported by two vice-captains, Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz , when he takes over the captaincy for the upcoming Nations League games against Hungary on Saturday and the Netherlands on September 10.
“Kimmich was the logical successor. He leads the way with his mentality. With the three players, we have a very good combination,” said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.
