The Story Behind Lamine Yamal and Sheila Ebana’s Photo with Lionel Messi
Who would have thought that 16-year-old Lamine Yamal had a past connection with Lionel Messi? For those who don’t know, you might have come across an old photo of the Argentine captain bathing a toddler with women. Well, they are actually none other than Yamal and Sheila Ebana. Interestingly, these photos came to light after their father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared them on Instagram. He also added a caption saying “the beginning of two greats.” The photo is from September 2007, courtesy of Joan Monfort. At the time, he was working for the Associated Press as a freelance photographer. Monfort later shared the story behind the image. Apparently, it was a photoshoot for a calendar that was conducted by Spanish newspaper Diario Sport and UNICEF as part of an annual charity campaign.
So Messi and his then Barcelona teammates were asked to pose with children and their families. Coincidentally, Monfort was paired with Messi, then 20, and Yamal, a few months old, for the photoshoot. It was held in the visitors’ dressing room at Camp Nou. The photographer recalled that he faced many challenges during the photoshoot, as Messi was unsure about how to interact with the young Yamal. That’s not all, as Monfort only realized Yamal was in the photos when a friend informed him that they had gone viral since the forward starred for Spain.
