Rodri joined Atlético de Madrid’s youth ranks in 2007, at the age of 11, and remained in the youth team until 2013. That same year, he joined Villarreal, where he was promoted to the professional team in 2015.
At Villarreal, he played 84 games, scoring two goals for the club. His first goal as a professional came against Almería, in a match valid for La Liga (Spanish Championship) in 2016–17.
Due to his performance at Villarreal, Atlético de Madrid sought to sign him in 2018, for 25 million euros. Rodri played 47 games for the club and attracted a lot of attention from English clubs.
In 2019, he was signed by Manchester City for 70 million euros.
Rodri participated in the Citizens’ victorious campaign in the 2023 Champions League, and scored the only goal in the final, which decided City’s first title in the competition. On June 11, 2023, UEFA announced that the midfielder was elected the best player in the Champions League.
The 2022–23 season has established Rodri as one of the best midfielders in the world. With 56 appearances this season for City (four goals and seven assists), as well as a World Cup and the rest of the games with La Roja, Rodri was voted the best Spanish player.
In the 2023 Club World Cup final, won by City with a 4–0 victory over Fluminense, Rodri took home the Ballon d’Or award for the best player of the competition. In great form, the Spanish player was a key player in coach Josep Guardiola’s team, dominating the midfield and being instrumental in City’s rout.
On 19 May 2024, Rodri reached 74 consecutive games without losing. This became a new record in world football history, in Manchester City’s 3–1 victory over West Ham.
