Jose Mourinho fined for Fenerbahçe defeat to rivals
Portuguese coach was not present at the press conference after losing the classic in Türkiye
Fenerbahçe’s 3-1 defeat to Galatasaray last Saturday was not the only setback for José Mourinho. The Portuguese coach did not attend the press conference held after the Turkish Premier League match and was fined 4,000 euros (R$24,500 at the current exchange rate).
José Mourinho, according to the Turkish newspaper Fanatik, gave a justification for his absence at the press conference. The Portuguese said that Okan Buruk, Galatasaray’s coach, had gone over the time for his conference and, therefore, had not had time to hold his own.
On the pitch, Mourinho also ended up with a defeat. Despite imposing a positive volume of play, the star-studded Galatasaray team shone. Uruguayan Lucas Torreira took a shot and was unlucky enough for goalkeeper Livaković to open the scoring, which was extended by Dries Mertens shortly after. The Belgian scored the third in the second half with an assist from Brazilian Gabriel Sara, formerly of São Paulo.
With the score at 3-0, Fenerbahçe only managed to score from a penalty kick by Edin Dzeko. The result leaves Mourinho’s team in second place in the Turkish Championship, with 13 points. In the lead is Galatasaray, who have won all six games in the competition.
Defeated on the field and punished off it, Mourinho was also provoked by Galatasaray on social media. In an image, the Turkish club’s official profile called the rival coach “The Crying One”, in reference to his nickname, The Special One.
Fenerbahçe returns to action on Thursday to face Twente from the Netherlands in the Europa League. The match starts at 4pm.
