Biography of Christian Eriksen

Born in Middelfart, Denmark, Eriksen followed in his father Thomas’s footsteps when he began playing football at the academy of local team Middelfart G&BK. Eriksen’s father was also one of the coaches at the time and in 2004 they helped the youth team finish unbeaten in the local league for the third time in a four-year period. The following year he joined Odense Boldklub, who competed in the Danish youth league and within a year he helped the club win the age-group title. It was at Odense that Eriksen began to show signs of his technical ability, with his dribbling and free-kick taking skills being praised by then-coach Tonny Hermansen. His performances at youth level attracted the attention of several top European clubs, including Chelsea and Barcelona. Eriksen underwent trials at both clubs, as well as Real Madrid, Manchester United and Milan, but decided to move to Ajax, stating: “My first step shouldn’t be too big. I knew that playing in the Netherlands would be very good for my development.” On 17 October 2008, Eriksen signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Ajax. The transfer fee received by Odense was estimated at €1 million, while Middelfart also received a sum of €35,000, which they later used to build a football pitch.

Eriksen came through the Ajax youth system and was promoted to the first team in January 2010, where he was given the number 51 shirt. He made his first-team debut in the Eredivisie in a 1–1 draw with NAC Breda. He scored his first goal for Ajax on 25 March in a 6–0 win over Go Ahead Eagles in the Dutch Cup, and extended his contract with the club the following month. By the end of his first professional season with the club, Eriksen had made 21 competitive appearances, scoring one goal, and made his debut for the Danish national team. Eriksen’s form throughout the campaign earned him praise from manager Martin Jol, who compared him to Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart, as well as Danish legend Michael Laudrup for his reading of the game in the traditional number 10 role.

Casted by clubs such as PSG and Borussia Dortmund, Eriksen joined Tottenham for a fee of €13.5 million in August 2013. He made his league debut against Norwich City on 14 September, providing an assist for Gylfi Sigurðsson in a 2–0 win. After the match, Spurs manager André Villas-Boas commented: “It was a great debut for Christian, he is a pure number 10, a creative player and his individual quality made all the difference.”

In the 2016–17 Premier League, Eriksen scored eight goals and contributed 15 assists as the club finished runners-up in the league. Eriksen also recorded the most assists in the 2016–17 FA Cup and later won Tottenham’s Player of the Season award, winning the award for the second time, after previously winning it in his debut season at the club.

After weeks of negotiations and much anticipation, he was announced as a new signing for Internazionale on January 28, 2020. The midfielder signed a contract until June 2024.
He made his debut on January 29, against Fiorentina, in a 2-1 victory in the Coppa Italia.
He terminated his contract with Inter on December 17, 2021, after being disallowed to play in the country after the League banned players from playing with heart monitoring devices. He played in 60 matches, scored eight goals and won Serie A in the 2020–21 season.

After almost 8 months without playing, on January 31, 2022, Eriksen was announced and officially announced as the new signing for Brentford of the Premier League, signing a contract valid until the end of the 2021–22 season. On 26 February, he made his first appearance as a substitute in a 2–0 defeat to Newcastle United, replacing Mathias Jensen, who had come on for Eriksen in the game in which he suffered a cardiac arrest. His stint at Brentford was short, with a total of 11 appearances and one goal. On 15 July 2022, Manchester United announced the signing of Eriksen, on a contract until 2025. On 14 November, he scored his first goal for the Red Devils in his 16th league match against Fulham, and also provided the assist for Garnacho’s winning goal. Manchester United beat Reading 3–1 on 28 January 2023 in the FA Cup quarter-finals. However, Eriksen suffered an ankle injury, which he sustained after being tackled hard by Andy Carroll. Manchester United have advised that he will take at least three months to recover.
