Evra on Man. United’s current form: «It’s my fault and Alex Ferguson’s»
Former Red Devils player also spoke about Ten Hag and the club’s future
Manchester United last won the Premier League title in 2013, the last season under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Since then, the Manchester side have failed to reach the highest levels of English or European football, and currently sit 12th in the league table under Erik ten Hag.
Former Red Devils player Patrice Evra left the club a year after Ferguson, and the former France captain believes United are still paying the price for those departures: “It’s always difficult to talk about United at the moment because back then we played for the fans, for the badge, for the history. We’ve lost a bit of that. I blame myself and I blame Sir Alex Ferguson. When we leave, we leave too soon and it’s hard for the players because they don’t have any role models.”
“I’m not in the know, I don’t know what the problem is. Coach Ten Hag is trying to do his best, but it’s not enough. But it’s not just about this season, since we won the last league in 2013, the club has been in chaos,” he told the BBC.
During Evra’s time in Manchester, United emerged as the dominant force in English football. The Frenchman now believes the club have been overtaken not only by rivals Manchester City , but also by the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal : “I’m a positive man, but it’s difficult. Our rivals are getting better than us, they play better football. The future is not bright. It’s a difficult time.”
“ Liverpool waited 30 years to win the Premier League again, now it’s been 11 years [since United ’s last title ]. I don’t want to wait that long. I’ll be a United fan for life anyway, but it’s very difficult to watch United play,” he said, then looking back at Ten Hag’s time in charge of the Red Devils: “He’s been at the club for three years and won two trophies. When you’re a United manager , what people expect of you is to win the league every year. We’ve got to stop talking about the past. This isn’t the United it used to be. We’ve got to rebuild.”
