Liverpool beats RB Leipzig and maintains 100% success in the Champions League
Darwin Núñez scores the only goal of the match as the Reds make it three consecutive wins in the competition
Liverpool win in Germany
Playing away from home, the Reds beat RB Leipzig and maintained their 100% record in the Champions League. With the 9 points won so far, Liverpool is in a very comfortable position to secure a place in the knockout stages of the competition.
The Germans are suffering their third consecutive defeat in the competition. They are one of six teams yet to score in the 2024/25 Champions League season.
The hero of the night
Uruguayan Darwin Núñez was the decisive factor for Liverpool . The often-criticised centre-forward who came through Peñarol appeared opportunistically to score England’s winning goal. After Salah deflected a cross, Darwin appeared alone at the far post to tap the ball into an empty net.
With Wednesday’s victory, the Reds are in second place in the league phase of the current edition of the Champions League. With nine points, Liverpool is behind only the surprising Aston Villa in the tiebreaker criteria.
Never-ending nightmare for RB Leipzig
This was the German team’s third consecutive defeat in this Champions League. It is true that the draw was not very friendly to the Leipzig team, placing them against Atlético de Madrid, Juventus and Liverpool right away.
The home defeat leaves a bitter taste for Marco Rose’s men, not only because of Darwin Núñez’s goal, but also because of Openda’s two disallowed goals. Will they be able to turn this bad phase around in the Champions League?
