Klopp explains move to Red Bull: “I don’t see myself as a coach…”
German will be the group’s new general director of football
Jurgen Klopp’s decision to join Red Bull as the group’s new general football manager was somewhat controversial. There was no shortage of criticism of the German coach, the most popular of which came from Mainz fans , the club where he played and trained.
Now, on Toni Kroos ‘ podcast , the coach, who also worked for Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund , has come forward to explain the reasons that led him to join this new project and addressed the criticism he has received: “I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, not at all, and I personally love all my former clubs. I don’t know exactly what I could have done to make everyone happy.”
«I’m 57 years old, so I can still work for a few more years, but I don’t see myself on the sideline [as a coach] for now. But it was always clear that I would not do nothing. And then this story with Red Bull came up, which for me is extraordinary,” said Klopp.
After 23 years as a manager, Klopp decided to retire from coaching after eight years as Liverpool boss , saying he was “running out of steam”. Last September, he was announced as Red Bull’s general manager of football.
