Phil Jones reacted to the official hiring of Rúben Amorim as Manchester United ‘s technical manager , this Friday, and lamented the club’s performance in recent years, as well as the inconsistency in performances, hoping that this will improve with the arrival of the Portuguese coach 39 years old.

«We have lost so much identity over the years, and it has been a slow but sure process in which we are moving away from where we need to be. We don’t know what style they’re going to play, how they’re going to play,” the former Red Devils defender began by saying to the BBC 5 Live Sport podcast , before informing the Portuguese about the task he will have in England .

«It will be an absolutely gigantic job. If you are the manager of Manchester United you have to get the best out of these players. They may not immediately be what we want, but we have to deal with it and, perhaps a year later, we can evaluate the situation again”, he explained, also stating that the club has to start being a little more defensive to have better results.

«I think we almost have to swallow our pride a little. I know the way we want to play and the way the United fans expect us to play, but maybe we have to play in a certain way to gain confidence and bring confidence back to the team”, he said, finally commenting on the 3- 4 -3 from Amorim, showing concern about the defensive line.

«Rúben Amorim… he plays with three in defense. I always think that when we played in a back three, as a defender, I always liked to play in the middle, because if you play on the wing, you are basically a defender and winger. There is a lot of space on the sides, as soon as the winger jumps forward, you have a lot of meters to jump too, because that is the space they will try to occupy», he concluded.
