Leicester avoid losing points despite breaking financial rules
The team was accused by the Premier League, but as they were relegated last season, they cannot be sanctioned anymore.
The English Football League (which governs the English championships from the 2nd to the 4th tier – EFL) confirmed this Friday that Leicester will not lose points this season, while the Foxes are in a heated fight in the Championship for promotion. to the Premier League .
In a statement, the EFL explained: “After obtaining legal advice, the EFL has confirmed that whilst it wishes to respect any decision by a Premier League disciplinary committee (and vice versa) to deduct points from the EFL, the EFL does not have that power to under the regulations.”
When the club, where Ricardo Pereira and Fatawu play, was accused of breaking the financial sustainability rules of the Premier League – where it was from 2014 until 2023 –, the EFL wanted to apply a points deduction during the current season.
In response, Leicester announced that they would sue the Premier League and EFL. In reaction to this Friday’s news, the club once again criticized the EFL’s initial intention of «wanting to act outside its rules» and praised the decision taken.
Premier League rules dictate that any team in the competition can, at most, record losses of 134 million euros over three years. Between 2020 and 2023, Leicester had losses of around 251 million euros, according to the BBC .
This regulation has already caused, this season, the loss of eight points to Everton (in two different processes) and four to Nottingham Forest .
Leicester currently leads the Championship with 88 points, the same as Ipswich and just one more than Leeds , despite having one game less than both direct opponents. The first two places give direct access to the Premier League.
