Ruud van Nistelrooy’s time as interim head coach at Manchester United is coming to an end , this Sunday with the reception to Leicester – curiously the first one he has faced -, and in the match programme the coach passes the baton to Ruben Amorim.

“The United fans have always held a special place in my heart, but I can honestly say that my love for you all has only grown during this time. The support I received from the stands at Old Trafford was fantastic and I have made memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I can only see good things for Manchester United ,” he wrote in a farewell tone, although it is not yet confirmed whether he will continue as assistant or not.

The Dutchman, who says he wrote it before the PAOK game, also has a message for the players when talking about how to turn things around. “It starts with the players taking responsibility for themselves and for others, because playing for Manchester United requires strong character, hard work and constant dedication. There is no room to hide, especially in today’s media environment, but this is the kind of challenge we have to relish and embrace. Be brave, give it your all and show your talent for yourself, for the badge on your shirt and, most importantly, for the best fans in the world.”

“I believe this club has all the ingredients to return to the levels I knew as a player. From tomorrow, I will support our new coach, Ruben Amorim, and I ask everyone who loves the club to do the same. I have worked with this group every day since the summer and I can tell you that there is huge potential in these players, from the experienced executives to the youngsters coming through the Academy. The coaches, the club staff and the fans all have a role to play in helping these players become the best players they can be,” he wrote, having not missed a single game he has managed.

In the three games he has been in charge of Man. United, Van Nistelrooy has recorded wins against Leicester (5-2, in the League Cup) and PAOK (2-0, in the Europa League), and a draw with Chelsea (1-1).
