Gyokeres’ former teammate impressed: ‘He became unstoppable’
Jake Bidwell, English defender, played with the Sporting forward at Swansea and Coventry
The hat trick he scored for Manchester City , in Sporting ‘s 4-1 victory, after Ruben Amorim had already been confirmed as coach of Manchester United , put Gyokeres on the world’s lips.
He has become coveted by European sharks, with the Premier League being pointed out as the near future for the Swede who, until now, when asked about this possibility, has only said that he is happy at Sporting .
This Friday, Jake Bidwell, the 31-year-old English defender, who shared a dressing room with the striker at Swansea and Coventry , in statements to the Manchester Evening News’, was impressed with Gyokeres ‘ progression .
“If they had told me that in three or four years he would be scoring goals in the Champions League it would have been difficult to believe. He arrived at Coventry on loan, then signed permanently and everyone said that the following summer he looked like a different man, he had been working in the gym all summer”, he began by saying.
He is a nightmare for centre backs to play against because he is constantly in action.
“The way he plays, his aggression, these are qualities that go hand in hand. He suddenly realized how fast and strong he is and, using his confidence, he mixed that with aggression, becoming unstoppable,” he added.
Regarding the possibility of making the jump to Manchester United , Bidwell is adamant: «Even if he doesn’t score, he’s not the type of player who doesn’t contribute to the game. The way you play makes you a constant threat. He can appear behind the defense, hold the ball, he is a nightmare for defenders to play against, he is constantly in action. He has improved his game in every aspect since I first saw him, but what sets him apart most is his aggression. Nothing seems to phase him and he has developed a bulletproof mentality. Sporting is a big club in Portugal and obviously the level is different, but he has already shown that he can play for a big club or on a stage like the Champions League .”
