Transfer Market: Arsenal close in on player who turned down Liverpool
Spain’s European champion could finally head to the Premier League
Arsenal is negotiating with Real Sociedad to buy Martin Zubimendi , who would only join the Gunners next summer, in exchange for 60 million euros. The Athletic reports that the English club have had the Basque on their radar for a long time and coach Mikel Arteta is the main driver of this deal.
If confirmed, Zubimendi would finally arrive in the Premier League , a year after refusing to join Liverpool , when both clubs had already finalized transfer details. However, the 25-year-old player preferred to remain at his hometown club, the only one he had known in his entire career.
Arsenal are very interested in signing Zubimendi, not only because of the quality of the central midfielder, but also because Thomas Partey and Jorginho , two players in the same position, are expected to leave the club at the end of the season, when their contracts expire.
A central figure for Real Sociedad over the last five seasons, Zubimendi is also a 15-time Spanish international and won Euro 2024, where he stood out with his performance in the final of the competition, when he replaced an injured Rodri at half-time in the game against England.
Zubimendi’s release clause is 60 million euros, an amount that Arenal will be willing to pay in a single payment in the summer, to guarantee this signing.
