Basque coach is the priority target to fill the vacant position after Domenico Tedesco was fired
After leaving West Ham , the Belgian national team could be Julen Lopetegui’s next destination. According to the television channel Les News, the Belgian federation’s sporting director, Vincent Mannaert, has chosen the Basque coach as the priority to fill the vacant position left after the dismissal of Domenico Tedesco.
The same source reports that there will be new meetings this week, but Lopetegui – who recently turned down a national team other than Belgium – is interested in the idea of coaching the Red Devils in a project that will last at least until the 2026 World Cup .
If an agreement is reached, the Spaniard, who previously managed FC Porto , should be accompanied by his assistant Óscar Caro.
It could be Lopetegui’s fifth experience in charge of a national team, after leading the under-19s, under-20s, under-21s and the Spanish senior team . As coach, he won a European Under-19 Championship (2012) and a European Under-21 Championship (2013).
It is worth remembering that Belgium also tried to sign Sérgio Conceição, before the Portuguese coach moved to Milan .
