Dalot reveals Amorim’s orders and wishes for the coach
Player praises his compatriot’s work at Man. United and the special feeling he feels about playing for this club since 2018
Diogo Dalot is Manchester United ‘s most used player this season and under the tutelage of Ruben Amorim, he has been playing on one of the team’s wings, in the 3x4x3 formation, a position that he admits is «a little frustrating».
“For us full-backs, when we do the doubles on the wings, where we’ve just done a 60 or 70-metre sprint and they don’t pass the ball to us, it’s nice when they recognise our effort because we’ve just gone all the way across the pitch to give them another passing option and if we lose the ball, it’s us who have to go back and defend,” Dalot told the Masterclass programme , hosted by former Man. United player Owen Hargreaves.
The Portuguese player then explained the orders that his coach, and compatriot, has for the team: «The coach always asks us that when we are in the final third of the pitch, we have at least four players in the area in a position to finish the play. Both wingers have to be there, ideally the centre forward and the two number 10s.»
And Dalot is enjoying working with Amorim, hoping he will “stay at the club for a long time”, helping to “build a new history, with victories and trophies”. “I can guarantee that this club will win again, whether now or in the future. I am 100% sure of that.”
The 25-year-old is now in his seventh season at Manchester United (with a loan spell at Milan in between), and he said: “It took me four years to start playing for this team on a regular and consistent basis. Now that I’ve been at the club for seven seasons, I feel proud of the journey I’ve made and the development I’ve made. At the end of my career, it doesn’t matter how many trophies I’ve won or whether people liked me or not, but the feeling that I’ve played for Manchester United all this time. It’s not for everyone.”
