Manchester United prepares to lay off around 200 people
“We’ve been losing money for five years. This can’t be the case,” says the Red Devils’ CEO

Financial problems continue for Manchester United and, after laying off 250 people last year, the club represented by Ruben Amorim, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot announced that, in the near future, the Red Devils will enter a restructuring process that could lead to the departure of another 150 to 200 employees.
“The transformation plan aims to make the club sustainable again after five years of losses since 2019. This will create a stronger financial platform from which the club can invest in the success of men’s and women’s football and in infrastructure. As part of these measures, the club anticipates that 150 to 200 jobs may be made redundant, subject to a consultation process with employees. These would add to the 250 departures made last year,” began the statement from Manchester United , which announced a “transformation plan” to reverse the financial losses of recent years.
The statement features words from Omar Berrada, the club’s CEO, who highlights two priorities: success on the pitch and improving infrastructure. “We have a responsibility to put Manchester United in the best position to win. We will embark on a wide range of measures that will transform and renew the club. Unfortunately, this means announcing potential redundancies and we are sorry for our colleagues. However, these difficult choices are necessary to put the club in a position of financial stability. We have been losing money for five years in a row. This cannot be. Our main objectives are to deliver success on the pitch and improve infrastructure. We cannot invest in these if we continue to lose money,” explained Berrada, who hopes that the team will be “more agile, flexible and financially sustainable”.
If confirmed, the number of layoffs could reach 450 in the space of a year, all in measures taken to improve the financial health of Ruben Amorim’s team.
