Rummenigge: ‘Wirtz is Bayern’s main target’
The Bavarian club’s director considers the Bayer Leverkusen winger to be “the best German player” at the moment
Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is now part of the Bavarian club’s board. In an interview with German media outlet Abendzeitung, the director stated bluntly that the Munich club’s main objective for the upcoming summer transfer window is to sign Florian Wirtz .
“Signing Wirtz is clearly our goal. Everyone at Bayern agrees that he is exactly the player we want to sign. Not to weaken Leverkusen , but to strengthen us,” said the former German international, who believes Wirtz is “the best German player” at the moment.
Wirtz has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027, with a market value of 140 million euros. However, for Rummenigge, this is secondary: «It is not the market value that is decisive, but the amount that would have to be paid in a transfer»
«Reaching an agreement will undoubtedly be the most difficult, because Wirtz is a player who is in high demand», he considered.
It is worth remembering that, in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League , Bayern will face, precisely, Bayer Leverkusen and Florian Wirtz – in addition to the fight that both teams are fighting to win the Bundesliga .
Biggest rival: Leverkusen or Dortmund?
When asked who Bayern ‘s biggest rivals are , Rummenigge said the pharmacists have taken the place of Borussia Dortmund : ” Leverkusen have taken the place of Borussia Dortmund, that’s for sure. They will probably be the team that will challenge us the most domestically in the coming years.”
With an eight-point lead in the league, the former striker is “optimistic” that Bayern will get the better of their Leverkusen rivals and bring the championship back to Munich.
