Italian coach reveals why he doesn’t want to continue in charge of Roma

Ranieri: “Gasperini will not be my successor, they haven’t agreed yet”

Claudio Ranieri announced on Thursday that Gian Piero Gasperini will not be his successor, suggesting that the name of Roma ‘s next coach has not yet been made public.

«Gasperini? He will not be my successor and the next coach of Roma . They haven’t got it right yet. Maybe next week we’ll talk about someone else. Every coach would like to coach Roma. The names I proposed, together with Ghisolfi [sporting director], have not yet been released. The president is the one who decides when he will say the name, but he will be one of the coaches proposed by us. Fan approval will be important, but it’s victories that make a coach instantly beloved. They have to accept a certain project, we can’t spend like crazy,” he said at a press conference, explaining why he doesn’t want to continue in charge of the Giallorossi .

“If I stay, we will lose a year. I cannot be the future of Roma . The sooner [a new coach] arrives, the better. Roma’s owners [the Fredkin family] want to make the club big, but they cannot spend as much money as they would like because of financial fair play . They brought in someone like Jose Mourinho, they are pushing for the construction of the stadium. These are things that count,” he added.

Roma are seventh in Serie A with 49 points, two away from the European competition spots, and visit Lecce on matchday 30.
