Britain’s unluckiest player: put him in goal and relegation is certain

Southampton have broken a record. No team in the history of the Premier League had been relegated after just 31 games, so Ivan Jurić’s men, after a year in the top flight, will return to the Championship. The question is whether Aaron Ramsdale will continue in goal.

Britain’s unluckiest player: put him in goal and relegation is certain

Aaron Ramsdale was probably the Saints ‘ only individual highlight , along perhaps with the talented Tyler Dibling, but it was not enough to avoid disaster. Now, the British press highlights the fact that this is the third relegation of an English international goalkeeper in his career.

Despite being, without a doubt, a quality goalkeeper with a good reputation, he is now the protagonist of a narrative in which he is the unluckiest player in Britain. As bad as Southampton have been this season, many find it strange that it was precisely with Ramsdale in goal that the club made negative history, becoming the team to be relegated the fastest in the Premier League .

In just six years, the 26-year-old goalkeeper has been relegated for the third time, meaning he is relegated every two seasons.

Ramsdale’s ‘curse’ since Bournemouth

The Stoke -on-Trent native’s first relegation came with Bournemouth in 2020. At the time, the Cherries ended a five-year run in the Premier League just one point behind Aston Villa , despite beating Everton on the final day.

However, Ramsdale remained in the top flight, as Sheffield United paid €20 million for him and, the following season, they were relegated as the worst team in the Premier League , with just 23 points. The goalkeeper did not play in the Championship at that time, having been signed by Arsenal , but there he had no chance of playing, nor of being relegated.

Until, last summer, Southampton came along and signed him, with a certain aura of defeat. So much so that the mission ended in April, at least officially, and much earlier than everyone had predicted in September.
