Europa League: Atalanta equals Barcelona and Real Madrid’s records
Victory at Anfield against Liverpool was historic for several reasons
Atalanta took a surprising giant step forward against Liverpool by winning 3-0 at Anfield Road in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals . It was a true Bergamo hurricane that passed through Merseyside and vulgarized the Reds .
With this triumph, which brought La Dea very close to the semi-finals of the competition (where they can face Benfica ), the club led by Gian Piero Gasperini equaled a record that only Barcelona and Real Madrid had: achieving two victories at Anfield in European competitions. The Italians’ other triumph in the city of the Beatles was in 2020 in the Champions League , 2-0.
Liverpool have not lost at home in all competitions since Real Madrid won 2-5 in the 1st leg of last season’s Champions League round of 16. The Whites ‘ other victory at Anfield was in the same competition, in 2014, by 0-3.
Barcelona also won at Liverpool’s stadium in two Champions League games: 3-1 in 2001/02 and 1-0 in 2006/07.
The difference between Atalanta and both Spanish giants is that the Italians have a 100% winning record at Anfield, as they have only played there twice. Both Merengues and Culés have both drawn and lost at this stadium.
