World champion in 2014 says goodbye to the pitch
Shkodran Mustafi ends his career at 32. He will be assistant coach for the German under-17 team
Without a club since leaving Levante at the end of the 2022/2023 season, Shkodran Mustafi has now announced that he has ended his career. He will take on the role of assistant coach with the German under-17 team.
The former defender, who was world champion with Germany in 2014, played for Everton, Sampdoria, Valencia, Arsenal, Schalke and, finally, Levante.
Speaking to the German Football Federation (DFB), Mustafi regrets having to end his career early, but is prepared for the next step: «I have been thinking about gaining experience as a coach for a long time. On the one hand, it’s a shame it came so early, because I wish I had played football for longer. On the other hand, I am truly looking forward to the next challenge and to taking my first steps as a coach in the DFB. I want to pass on all the experience I gained in my time at under-15s to under-21s and, of course, with the main team for the boys.”
The defender won 20 caps for the German national team between 2014 and 2017 and was also part of the squad for the 2016 European Championship. In addition to the World Cup in 2014, he won the Confederations Cup in 2017.
