All About Martin Ødegaard

Biography of Martin Ødegaard

Ødegaard began his career with Strømsgodset’s youth teams and began training with the main team in 2013, at the age of fourteen. He also had trial periods at Bayern Munich and Manchester United. In January 2014 he was promoted to Strømsgodset’s first team, but without signing a contract. The agreement with the club provided that he could train two nights a week with Mjøndalen, the club where his father is an assistant coach.

He made his debut for Strømsgodset in a match against Aalesunds on 13 April 2014 (where he provided an assist). At fifteen years of age, he became the youngest player to take the field in the history of the Norwegian Championship. He signed his first professional contract in May 2014, which was valid until the end of the 2015 season.

On 16 May 2014, he scored the fourth goal in his club’s 4-1 victory over Sarpsborg 08 FF, becoming the youngest player to score in a Norwegian Championship match. His debut in a European competition took place on July 16, 2014, in the 1-0 defeat against Steaua Bucureşti, in the qualifying rounds of the 2014–15 Champions League.
His signing by Real Madrid was announced on January 22, 2015, for amounts and length of contract not disclosed by the club.

Martin’s signing by Real Madrid came months after Croatian Alen Halilović arrived at Merengues’ biggest rival, Barcelona. As both were young players (16 and 18 years old, respectively), and played for the main teams in Spain, a rivalry was created between them. Coincidentally, the two players were compared to Argentine star Lionel Messi and were considered the greatest promises of their respective countries.
Initially, Ødegaard would play for Real Madrid Castilla. He made his debut for Real on May 23, 2015, in the last match of the Spanish Championship, when he replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the 56th minute against Getafe, becoming the youngest player to play for the main team, aged 16 years, five months and six. days.

With no chance at Real, on January 9, 2017 he was loaned to Heerenveen for a period of 18 months. Coincidentally, the young promise that “rivaled” Ødegaard, Alen Halilović, would arrive at the team, also on loan, 2 years later.
In his first months, the player managed to contribute with just 1 goal. In the match, valid for the Europa League Play-offs, Martin scored a goal in the defeat against FC Utrecht.

On August 21, 2018, he was loaned to Vitesse for a period of one year.
At the club, Martin managed to stand out too much. Playing for the 2018–19 Eredivisie, the player managed to directly contribute with 21 goals, including 10 assists and 11 goals. So much prominence made the player attract more attention to his football, as he once did. His consistent season saw him named Vitesse’s Best Player of the Season.

On July 7, 2019, his loan to Real Sociedad was confirmed. He scored his first goal for the club on August 25, in a La Liga match, against Mallorca. Away from home, Real Sociedad won 1-0.
At the Spanish club, the young man once again demonstrated a lot of talent, managing to contribute 7 goals and 9 assists throughout the season. The team’s season was crowned with the 2019–20 Copa del Rey title, which was the midfielder’s first title in his career. During the same competition, Martin scored a goal against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

After three loans, his return to the Merengue club was announced on August 11, 2020, at the request of coach Zinédine Zidane.
In that year 2020, the player was once again affected by some injuries that prevented the Norwegian from being listed on several occasions. Despite this, it was in that same season that the young player managed to play his highest number of games: 9 matches.

After a good spell at Real Sociedad the previous season, Ødegaard returned to Real Madrid, but again received few opportunities from coach Zinédine Zidane. It was then that the Norwegian decided to head to a league that had not yet been explored in his career. On January 27, 2021, England’s Arsenal agreed a loan with Real until the end of the season.
Martin had scored 2 goals for Arsenal that season, but his individual performances meant that the player was passed over by management.
