Biography of Nuno Mendes
Born in Sintra, a municipality in Lisbon, Nuno Mendes started out at Despertar, a club based in Casal de Cambra, brought by coach Bruno Botelho. He quickly stood out at the small club, and was already noticed by the three big clubs in Portugal: Porto, Benfica and Sporting. But the club that took him was the green club, in 2012, when Nuno was 9 years old when he joined.
The way he joined Sporting was curious. When he was walking back home after school, Nuno realized that he was being followed by a man. As soon as he realized, Nuno started running and trying to lose him with long strides and dodges, but he was unsuccessful. So desperate at the time, Nuno arrived and quickly went into his house, which was in a very poor neighborhood, to protect himself and thinking that it was an attempted robbery. A few minutes later, the doorbell rang, but the “pursuer” was actually a scout from Sporting, who was keeping an eye on his football and wanted to take him to the club, so Nuno joined the youth teams and stayed there until he became a professional.
He made his professional debut on 12 June 2020, in a 1–0 win over Paços de Ferreira, coming on as a 72nd-minute substitute for Acuña. On 19 June, he extended his contract until 2025, with a €45 million release clause.
With Acuña’s move to Sevilla at the end of 2020, Nuno became Sporting manager Rúben Amorim’s first-choice player, aged just 18. He scored his first professional goal on 4 October 2020, in a 2–0 win over Portimonense.
On 15 December, he provided an assist for Šporar to open the scoring in a 2–0 win over Mafra in the 2020–21 League Cup quarter-finals. On 22 December 2020, he renewed his contract again until 2025, but increasing the release clause from €45 million to €70 million. On 26 March, he provided another assist, for Nuno Santos to score the first goal in a 2–0 victory over Boavista FC. At the end of the season, he was named in the 2020–21 Primeira Liga best team. Due to his good season, he was one of those chosen for the Golden Boy list, having been among the top 40. His signing by the French club was announced on 31 August 2021, on a loan with an option to buy for five years, totalling approximately €40 million.
He made his debut for the Parisian club on 11 September 2021 in a 4–0 win over Clermont on matchday 5 of Ligue 1. On 9 December 2021, he was named in the IFFHS U-20 World Team of the Year. He provided an assist for Thilo Kehrer to score the Parisian club’s second goal on 15 January, in a 2–0 win against Stade Bretois. In March, he was named by Goal in NXGN’s list of the 50 best newcomers in world football in 2021. In April 2022, he was rated by Football Observatory as one of the top five most expensive U-23 players in the world. He was crowned Ligue 1 champion in advance after PSG beat Lens 1–0 on matchday 34. At the end of the tournament, Mendes was selected in the team of the season. On May 31, his effective purchase by the Parisian club was announced for more than 40 million euros, with Nuno Mendes signing a contract until June 30, 2026. Just like last season, Mendes was one of those chosen for the Golden Boy list.
