Despite the Brazilian football transfer window closing on Monday, Serie A teams can still strengthen their squad with players from other countries. Names such as Sergio Ramos, Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial and Rafinha Alcantara head the long list of free agents on the market.
The phenomenon of athletes coming from the international market to Brazilian teams has become increasingly common in recent years. Uruguayan Luis Suárez and Danish Braithwaite, both signed by Grêmio, are more recent examples of the trend. In 2014, Argentine Nicolás Otamendi left Spanish football and joined Atlético-MG. 10 years later, well-known names in Europe can still be signed by Brazilian teams.
The CBF regulations state that players without a current contract with clubs can be registered to compete in the Brasileirão until September 9th, and can replace a maximum of 8 athletes from those previously registered until the 20th of this month. In addition to being able to play in the national competition, the new signings will be able to play in continental competitions.
For teams involved in the quarterfinals of the Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, Conmebol allows clubs to make up to three changes to their starting lists until September 13. For the semifinals, three changes can be made until October 18.
