Diogo Simeone calls up 14-year-old to Atlético de Madrid training
Rubén Gómez gets the opportunity to train with the main squad of the Spanish team and is called up to the under-16 team on the eve of his 15th birthday
A new face caught the eye during Tuesday’s training session for Atlético de Madrid ‘s first-team squad . A very new face, to be exact. Faced with several absences due to the FIFA deadline, coach Diego Simeone decided to call up 14-year-old Rubén Gómez for the first-team training session .
Rubén Gómez was born in Córdoba, Spain, on September 12, 2009. In other words, he will turn 15 this Thursday. The boy himself shared on his social media photos of training with professionals, such as midfielder Koke, 32, and versatile player Llorente, 29.
The boy should participate in other activities with the main squad throughout this week, according to information from the Spanish press. Atlético de Madrid had 11 players called up by their respective national teams for this FIFA date in September: Le Normand, Oblak, Griezmann, Sorloth, Gallagher, Reinildo, Musso, De Paul, Molina, Giuliano and Julián Álvarez.
Diego Simeone was unable to count on several names from the Spanish club’s older youth teams this time around, which “paved the way” for the 14-year-old to be called up.
In addition to the opportunity to train with the veterans, Rubén Gómez received his call-up to the Spain under-16 team on Tuesday, for a double friendly against Italy.
