Jürgen Klopp returned to Borussia Dortmund as coach on Friday. The coach, who was on sabbatical after leaving Liverpool , accepted an invitation from the club where he gained notoriety on the international scene to lead the veteran team in a festive game. The team celebrated the return of the commander on social media and released photos of the reunion ( see below).
The festive clash is in honor of Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek, two former Polish players who are important in Borussia Dortmund’s history. The players were part of the squad led by Klopp that won the German Championship twice in 2010 and 2011, as well as winning the 2011 German Cup.
Although both have already retired from the pitch, Borussia Dortmund decided to take advantage of the FIFA Date to bring together veteran characters who have made an impact on the team’s history.
The match will take place at Signal Iduna Park, home of Dortmund, on September 7. The list of players who will participate in the celebration includes Brazilians Dedê, Antônio da Silva and Felipe Santana, Argentine Lucas Barrios and German Mats Hummels.
Klopp began his coaching career in professional football at Mainz 05, where he ended his playing career. He then joined Borussia Dortmund in 2008, where he stayed for seven seasons. His achievements as coach of the yellow and black shirt include two German championships (2010 and 2011), one German Cup (2011) and two German Super Cups (2013 and 2014).
After leaving Borussia, he went on to coach Liverpool. In May of this year, Klopp announced that he would be leaving the English club, even though he had a contract until 2026, after eight and a half seasons with the team.
