Manchester United records a deficit of 113.2 million, but is not afraid of being punished

Manchester United announced on Wednesday that the club recorded losses of £113.2 million, last season (2023/24). It is the fifth consecutive financial year that United has finished in the red. Despite this, the board believes that the institution will not be punished for failing to comply with the Premier League ‘s financial fair play rules .

According to the Premier League’s financial sustainability rules, a club can have a deficit of £105 million (R$770.6 million) over a three-year period. That is, a smaller amount than Manchester United recorded: £270.8 million.

However, some deductions are allowed, such as investment in infrastructure and youth teams. The club’s board believe the men’s first team will not be penalised by having points deducted, as happened to Nottingham Forest and Everton last season .

Manchester United ended 2023/24 in the red despite achieving record revenues of £661.8m. The £73.1m increase in losses compared to the season was linked to money invested in the transfer market and the failure to qualify for the Champions League.

— The club remains committed to the Premier League’s financial sustainability rules and UEFA’s Financial Fair Play. We are working towards greater sustainability and changes to our operations to make them more efficient — said Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada.

Manchester United are in 14th place in the Premier League table, with three points from three games played.
