Mbappé at PSG: French league advises mediation, but player rejects it

The legal committee of the French Professional Football League (LFP) met with lawyers for Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and offered mediation so that the dispute between the two does not end up in the ordinary courts. According to the French press, the entity tried to convince the parties, with the aim of finding a solution to the situation. However, the player’s side rejected the proposal.

– The possibility of mediation was raised this morning. This hypothesis was rejected, at the hearing, by the player’s representative – Mbappé’s staff told the AFP news agency .

Mbappé is demanding from PSG amounts close to 55 million euros, according to the French newspaper Le Monde . The amount refers to debts such as the last third of a signing bonus that the player should have received in February, the last three months of salary, and an “ethical bonus” also in that period. The star has taken action not only with the LFP but also with UEFA .

– Paris Saint-Germain is very pleased with today’s two-hour hearing before the commission. The club recalled that the player has made clear and repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having obtained unprecedented benefits from the club during seven fantastic years in Paris. In light of the club’s oral and documented arguments, the commission insisted on mediation between the parties, which Paris Saint-Germain has sought for months. The commission has now invited the player to consider the mediation process – said PSG in an official statement.

With just a few days left before his contract with PSG ended, Mbappé had notified the French club, demanding payment of overdue wages and bonuses . The figures, at the time, exceeded €100 million, according to newspapers L’Équipe and Le Parisien and broadcaster RMC Sport .

Given the imbroglio, PSG runs the risk of being punished by the LFP, such as being unable to sign players until the situation is regularized. Mbappé, for his part, left the French club at the age of 25 and after seven seasons, and was announced by Real Madrid in a free transfer.

Understand the case

The French press had been predicting a legal battle between the club and the player since Mbappé’s decision not to renew his contract with the club for another year, before the agreement with Real Madrid. French media outlets reported that PSG would not pay the loyalty bonus in full.

In the 2022/23 pre-season, Mbappé was withdrawn from PSG’s trip to Asia after informing the club that he would not extend his contract until 2025. The player and the club later reached an agreement for the forward’s reinstatement, which would mean giving up around €55 million gross of the loyalty bonus .

However, according to L’Equipe , no agreement has been signed, and the terms of the original contract are still legally valid. Mbappé has no intention of giving up what he would be entitled to, and the two parties are expected to fight in court. A notice from the LFP obliged PSG to pay its former player by June 30. The club told the newspaper that “negotiations are continuing.”
