Messi will return to play after two months away
Argentine star will be available for Inter Miami’s MLS game this Saturday: “It means having the best player in the world back,” says coach Gerardo Martino
Lionel Messi is back. How he will return has not yet been decided. However, the Argentine star has recovered from the ankle injury he suffered during the Copa América and will be included in the squad for Inter Miami’s match this Saturday against the Philadelphia Union, in the 28th round of Major League Soccer.
Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino said on Friday that Messi is ready to play. The forward trained normally throughout the week but missed Wednesday’s session, which was open to the media, because of a cold
— (He) is fine now, he returned to training yesterday (Thursday). He is expected to play tomorrow’s game and, after training (on Friday), we will define the strategy for him. But yes, he is available — commented the coach, in a press conference.
Messi was injured during the Copa América final between Argentina and Colombia (Argentina won 1-0 and took the title ). The star player twisted his right ankle while trying to cross the ball in the first half. He remained on the field until the middle of the second half and, when he was substituted, he cried a lot on the bench.
This match was on July 17. Since then, Inter Miami has played eight games (six wins and two losses) in Major League Soccer and the Leagues Cup, a competition that brings together teams from the United States and Mexico.
— This means the return of the best player in the world, within a team that is on a positive run. We are all happy about this situation — commented Martino.
