Relive with ge the biggest records, among athletes and teams, of the biggest competition between clubs in Europe.
Goalscoring, assists and penalties
The three categories have the same names at the top and second place on the record list: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi . The Portuguese is the top scorer in the history of the Champions League, has provided the most assists and converted the most penalties. The Argentine comes in just behind.
In assists and penalties, the difference between Cristiano and Messi is small. In the first, the Al-Nassr player has 42 contributions in his career, and Lionel has 40. In the penalty count, only one goal separates the athletes: 19 to 18 for the Portuguese striker.
The biggest gap between the two is in goals scored, with CR7 having 141*, while Messi has 129. Check out the complete ranking of Champions League top scorers below.
Games played and more time on the field
Cristiano Ronaldo once again appears at the top of these two categories. However, unlike the first three criteria, the Portuguese’s fight is not with Lionel Messi, but with the Spaniard Iker Casillas .
The striker and the goalkeeper alternate between the first and second positions in the rankings. Casillas is the player with the most minutes on the field in the history of the competition , totaling 16,267. CR7, on the other hand, is the second with the most time on the field with 16,189.
In turn, Cristiano is the leader in the number of matches, with 187 matches , while Casillas has six games less and is in second.
Lionel Messi is third in both statistics: the Argentine played 163 games and accumulated 13,584 minutes.
Top scorer by season
When it comes to Champions League top scorers, the rankings show a variety of names in recent seasons. In the last competition, 2023/24, Kylian Mbappé was the player who scored the most goals. The Frenchman was still playing for Paris Saint-Germain and scored eight goals .
In 2022, the top scorer was Erling Haaland, with Manchester City , scoring 12 goals. In 2021, the first place goes to Karim Benzema , helping Real Madrid with 15 goals. The Norwegian also appears in the lead in 20/21, when he was at Borussia Dortmund and scored 10 times.
In the past, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi reigned supreme. For 12 seasons, only the two athletes have topped the top scorers’ lists, alternating with six leadership positions for each side.
Lionel Messi has had all the peaks as a goalscorer for Barcelona (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2018) . The Argentine’s biggest record was in the 14/15 season, with 14 goals, when he won the first Champions League trophy with the Catalan club.
Cristiano first appeared in the rankings during his time at Manchester United, when he scored eight goals in the 2007/08 season. Since then, he has returned to the top spot on five other occasions (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017).
The Portuguese can also boast of being the top scorer of the season among all editions , as the two biggest records are his: 17 goals in 13/14 and 16 goals in 15/16.
Youngest player
The record for the youngest player to play in the Champions League is held by German Youssoufa Moukoko. The record was broken in December 2020, at the age of 16 years and 18 days. The striker came on as a substitute 13 minutes into the second half of Zenit vs. Borussia Dortmund, in the last round of the group stage of that edition.
At just 15 years old, Moukoko began training with Borussia Dortmund’s first team and made his debut for the team the day after his 16th birthday. He is also the youngest player to play in the Bundesliga.
Lamine Yamal is second on the Champions League list, at 16 years and 68 days, but he is first when the criterion is the youngest starters in a match. The feat is on the list of records for the Spaniard, who is also the youngest to play, win and score a goal in the Euro Cup, a tournament he won with Spain in July 2024. In addition to being the youngest starter in the Spanish Championship and for Barcelona.
Oldest player
Coincidence or not, the four oldest players to ever take to the pitch in the Champions League are goalkeepers. At the top of the list are two Italians: Marcos Balotta in first, at 43 years and 252 days, playing for Lazio, and Gianluigi Buffon, at 42 years and 315 days, playing for Juventus . The statistics do not take into account matches in the preliminary stages of the competition.
The only outfield player in the top five in this category is also the oldest player to score a goal in the Champions League. Pepe is fifth in the ranking of oldest players, at 41 years and 15 days, and entered the second statistic when he scored at 40 years and 254 days. The goal was in Porto’s 2-0 victory against Royal Antwerp, in the old group stage of the 2023 edition.
Check out the top 5 oldest players ranking:

Club Statistics
Among the team records, Real Madrid is easily the best. The Spanish team has 15 titles under its belt , the most in history. In fact, it is more than the second and third placed teams on the list , Milan and Liverpool , who have seven and six trophies, respectively. The Italian team, however, has not won since 2006, while the leader has won five of the last nine editions, three of them consecutively.
Another criterion that shows a big difference between Vini Jr.’s team and the runner-up is the number of goals scored. Real Madrid scored 1,075 goals, while Bayern Munich is in second place with 825. The Madrid team is also the leader in seven other categories, including games won, lost and drawn:
- Highest number of entries – 43
- Matches played – 489
- Wins – 294
- Defeats – 110
- Draws – 85
- Most goals scored – 1075
- Most goals conceded – 536
The only criterion, between teams, that Real does not take is the highest number of expulsions, won by Juventus, with 28. Two more than Porto and Bayern Munich, second placed with 26. Real appears in third place, with 24 red cards.
2024 Edition
This season’s edition features some major new features compared to the previous ones. In addition to the new visual identity and the change to the traditional opening music for the games, the draw for the first phase of the Champions League was developed by software , which instantly defined the eight rivals that each team will face, with four away games and the same number at home.
The new format of the competition also features the largest number of participating teams in history, 36 in total. The opening round of the championship will take place between September 17 and 19, and the league phase will run until early 2025. The grand final of the Champions League is scheduled for May 31.
