Tottenham score two late goals to avoid embarrassment in the English League Cup
The London team was losing to second division side Coventry City until the 42nd minute of the second half.
With a goal from Diop Spence in the 42nd minute of the second half and another from Brennan Johnson in the 46th minute, Tottenham came from behind to beat Coventry City 2-1 and narrowly escaped the embarrassment of being eliminated in their debut in the English League Cup by a team from the second division. In another game on Wednesday, Brighton beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 at home.
Out of the English top flight since 2001, Coventry opened the scoring in the 17th minute of the second half, with Thomas Asante, but the fans’ celebrations ended in the final minutes with Tottenham’s comeback.
Despite qualifying for the round of 16, the difficulty in overcoming a second division team once again exposed Tottenham’s complicated start to the season.
With just one win in four Premier League rounds, the London team is only 13th, with four points. Coach Ange Postecoglou’s team returns to the field on Saturday, against Brentford, at home, in the fifth round of the Premier League.
