Van Persie’s team suffers historic defeat in Dutch Premier League
Heerenveen’s 9-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar was their worst ever. Coach defends himself: “That’s part of football”
Last Saturday (14) is a day that Heerenveen fans will certainly want to forget. The 9-1 away defeat to AZ Alkmaar, in the second round of the Dutch Championship, was the worst in the history of the club, founded in 1920. Highlight for Irish center forward Troy Parrott, who scored four goals in the match. Mijnans, Sadiq, Meerdink, Belić and Buurmeester scored the other goals for the home team. Brouwers scored for the visitors.
Despite the result, coach Robin van Persie , who made history as a player for Arsenal and Manchester United , as well as, of course, the Dutch national team, tried to reduce the pressure over the defeat.
– Neither my players nor I are traumatized. This is part of football, which requires falling and getting up – he said.
“It’s tough. There are certain bumps you hit in your career, and this one was a big one. We learned more lessons than we normally do,” he explained.
This is an experience that the Dutchman had already gone through during his playing days. When he was still playing for the Gunners, the center forward suffered one of his worst defeats.
– I know how it works. I lost 8-2 to United once. It wasn’t fun, but it’s part of being a footballer. It’s a trial and error thing. The world of football can be tough… It’s easy to be happy and play music when you win… – he said.
