Atlético Madrid punished for objects thrown in reduced derby
Sanction increases from three to just one closing meeting for some sectors of the stadium
Atlético Madrid have seen their punishment reduced from three to just one game by the Competition Committee of the Royal Spanish Federation following incidents in the derby against Real Madrid.
Originally, the Colchoneros were forced to partially close the south zone of their stadium for three games, but after they filed an appeal, the sanction was reduced to just one game.
In its appeal, Atlético Madrid argued that the punishment was “disproportionate” to the events that occurred in the second half of the derby, when objects were thrown from closed areas towards Real Madrid goalkeeper, Belgian Thibaut Courtois.
