Barcelona thrash Real Madrid at the Bernabéu
Leader of the Spanish league, the Catalan team opens up a six-point lead in the table and prevents its rival from equalling its historic record
Summary
With a tactical masterclass, especially in the first half, when they took extreme risks by betting on the offside trap, Barcelona thrashed their rivals Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, consolidating the great start to the season for the team coached by German Hansi Flick. Lewandowski scored twice, Lamine Yamal extended the lead and Raphinha closed the scoring with a great lob.
RECORD IS ONLY BARÇA’S
Real Madrid were looking to reach 43 games unbeaten in La Liga at their stadium, to equal the record held by Barcelona since 2018. The rout over their rivals was a resounding response from Barça, who remain the sole holders of the record. The Catalans also have an advantage in the La Liga table: Hansi Flick’s team, which had already entered as leaders, left with a six-point advantage over their rivals.
GOLDEN BALL MONDAY
Considered the favorite for the Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded on Monday by France Football magazine in Paris, Brazilian Vinícius Júnior did not shine in the classic, well marked by Koundé and also boxed in by Barcelona’s good defensive strategy.
OFFSIDE 5 X 0 MBAPPÉ
The first half saw a private duel between Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona’s defensive strategy. With their last line well advanced, the Catalan team managed to put the Frenchman offside five times. As a result, all of Real’s good chances in the first half, including a goal by Mbappé, were cancelled out early on.
SECOND HALF RUSH
Ten minutes into the second half, Barcelona were already leading 2-0. Lewandowski opened the scoring in the eighth minute, coming out unmarked in front of Lunin after a great pass from Casadó. Two minutes later, he headed in a great cross from Balde. With the advantage, Barça took control of the game and gave Real no chance to react. In the 31st minute, Raphinha beat Lucas Vázquez in a race and passed to Yamal to score the third. The Brazilian completed the rout in style: in the 39th minute, he received the ball in the area and beat Lunin with a beautiful right-footed touch.
