Celta de Vigo ‘provokes’ Real Madrid: “There is a title they will never have”
Galician club releases statement ahead of home game against the ‘blancos’, scheduled for this Saturday. Club recalls winning the Intertoto Cup in 2000, a UEFA trophy that has since been discontinued
The game is only on Saturday, but tempers between Celta de Vigo and Real Madrid are already running high.
All because the Galicians, who face the Madrid team this weekend in a match counting towards the 10th round of the Spanish league, released a statement this Thursday in which they mentioned the title that the Whites “will never have.”
Celta de Vigo won the Intertoto Cup in 2000, in the final against Zenit , a trophy that Real Madrid does not have in its list of honours. The Galicians are ironic, inviting “all fans” of the Merengues to “take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy the European trophy that they will never have”.
It should be noted that the European competition was organized by UEFA from 1995 until 2008, the year in which it was discontinued.
Earlier, at the beginning of the statement, Celta recognized the greatness of Real Madrid, “one of the biggest clubs in the world, with 130 titles in its museum.”
Celta’s statement
This Saturday, the 19th, Real Club Celta will host one of the biggest clubs in the world at Abanca Balaídos: Real Madrid. Without a doubt, the most successful club in the history of world football, with 130 titles in its trophy room. Among them, the brand new 15 European Cups that preside over the famous Madrid museum and a total of 23 European trophies.
Local historians have detected an anomaly, a curiosity when talking about Real Madrid and Real Club Celta. It is common to label the white club as the team that has “won everything”. However, this is not entirely true.
Some may think that the Celtic club’s trophy cabinet is “empty”, but the Celtic museum displays a continental trophy that does not appear in the Madrid trophy room. A title that teams of the stature of PSG or Juventus proudly display, just like Celta. Because the history of Real Club Celta is more modest, but not without greatness.
Knowing how important trophies are to Madrid fans, Real Club Celta is offering all the Merengues fans who travel to Abanca Balaídos this Saturday our only European title to date and, at the same time, a continental title that the white club will never have in its cupboard.
The Intertoto Cup is an official tournament organised by UEFA between 1995 and 2008. It was in the summer of 2000 that the club won this title, with a hard-fought victory in the final against Zenit St Petersburg. The goals scored by Karpin and Juanfran have gone down in history as the authors of the first and, for now, only continental title in Galician football.
RC Celta invites all Madrid fans to take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy up close the European trophy that they will never have. To this end, a stand will be set up outside the Vigo stadium from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday the 19th
Real Madrid fans who want to take photos, touch and feel this title up close will be able to do so before the game, free of charge, at the invitation of Celta.
