Born in Longsight, Manchester, Welbeck is the son of Ghanaian parents. He joined Manchester United in the 2005–06 season, joining the Under-18s. He made his senior debut for the team on 8 April 2006 in a Premier League match against Sunderland. In total, he scored nine goals in 14 youth team appearances in 2007–08, and seven goals in eleven reserve appearances, including a spectacular hat-trick against Manchester City. Welbeck signed for Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion on 18 October 2020 on a free transfer on a one-year deal. He made his debut two weeks later, coming on as a substitute for Leandro Trossard in a 2–1 away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. He made his first start five days later, playing 86 minutes of a 0–0 home draw against fellow Premier League side Burnley. Welbeck played in Brighton’s 3–2 home win over champions Manchester City on 18 May, as fans returned to football, in which they came back from 2–0 down to beat City for the first time since 1989. However, Welbeck’s appearance was cut short, as he went off injured in the 29th minute.
