“I was lucky enough to spend time with Cristiano and unlucky enough to spend time with Messi…”
Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas spoke about this Saturday’s El Clásico
During the week of El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona , Iker Casillas, former goalkeeper for the Merengues and FC Porto , recalled the duels between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the ‘big game’ of Spanish football and considered it «difficult» for current players to reach the levels of these stars: «I was lucky enough to be able to spend time with Cristiano and unlucky enough to spend time with Messi… But we are talking about two players who are extraordinary. These two ‘monsters’ made us think that it was easy to do what they did.»
«I think that football, the positioning and the legacy they leave for those who come after them is complicated. And we are talking about incredible players like Mbappé , Vinícius , Rodrygo , Lewandowski , Yamal … It will be difficult to compare them to what Cristiano and Messi were , but, even so, things are evolving, the wheel is turning and players will continue to emerge», considered the former player, at an event by La Liga and ESPN, in New York.
Casillas also spoke about the rivalry between the Blancos and Blaugranas: «It is a game that has the power and exclusivity to stop everyone at any time. Wherever you go, in any corner of the planet, everyone talks about Real Madrid – Barcelona .»
“It’s a long-standing rivalry and I think it’s very good and very positive that in this case Barcelona, which has been going through a very difficult financial situation, has players to be able to compete and fight for La Liga with Real Madrid. They are two brands, so to speak, that complement each other and need each other,” he added.
Regarding this Saturday’s match, the former goalkeeper ventured a prediction: “Playing at home, I see Real Madrid as stronger and more favoured, especially due to the support of the fans. I would bet on a 2-1 and that would keep La Liga competitive and exciting in every game.”
