On the day of the match at Estádio da Luz, against Benfica , in the Champions League , Bayern announced that Hiroki Ito underwent surgery. According to the Bavarian club, the Japanese central defender underwent another operation on his metatarsal. The intervention was successful.

Ito joined Bayern from Stuttgart last summer for €23.5m. However, he broke his metatarsal bone in a friendly against Duren (1-1) during pre-season and has yet to play a competitive game for the Munich side 

Last week, the Japanese international suffered a setback in his rehabilitation process and had to undergo surgery again.

“He needs to be patient now, he needs to take another break. Then he will certainly be back to his best. It’s bittersweet for him and for us,” said Bavarian coach Vincent Kompany.
