Chelsea broke record for scoring in the Conference League
The English are favourites to win the competition; João Félix has shone
Chelsea recorded their biggest ever win since the creation of the Conference League on Thursday night, crushing FC Noah from Armenia, a club founded just seven years ago, 8-0. The club is coached by Rui Mota and had a Portuguese trio in the starting eleven (Gonçalo Silva, Gonçalo Gregório and Hélder Ferreira).
The Blues were already winning 6-0 at half-time, in a match in which João Félix scored twice, making him the competition’s top scorer with 4 goals.
It is worth remembering that the coach has used a ‘second’ team in this competition and star Cole Palmer is not even registered. Even so, Chelsea lead, having already scored 16 goals and broken the record for goals in a single game in this third UEFA competition.
The difference to their opponents is such that some people wonder what Chelsea are doing in the Conference League.
“Chelsea shouldn’t be in this competition, but this is where they are. This tournament only starts for Chelsea in the quarter-finals or semi-finals. They are the big favourites to win,” former Blues midfielder Joe Cole told TNT Sport.
Former striker Peter Crouch is of the same opinion. “Looking at some of the clubs, I don’t see how they can miss this tournament,” he said.
The BBC notes that Chelsea are eighth in the UEFA club rankings, while last night’s opponents are 311th on the list.
What’s more, Transfermarkt values Noah’s entire squad at £6.5m (€7.8m) – compared to Chelsea’s squad, which is valued at £800m (€962m).
How did you get there?
After a very modest season, Chelsea finished the Premier League in sixth place and went to the Conference League play-offs and ended up eliminating Servette, earning a place in the competition in which they are now heavy favourites.
