Denmark draws 0-0 against Serbia and goes to the quarter-finals
Morten Hjulmand was a regular for the Danes in their trip to Serbia
Denmark , with Sporting ‘s Morten Hjulmand in the starting line-up and without Benfica ‘s Alexander Bah , who was injured, drew with a taste of victory. The goalless draw in Serbia was enough for the Danes to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Nations League .
The first 30 minutes did not provide much of a story to tell in the match. Denmark managed to maintain greater control of possession, but Serbia were more direct, although without any particular danger, apart from a shot by Mitrovic that went wide and a ball by Vlahovic that was saved by Schmeichel . From the half-hour mark onwards, Denmark grew and, through Damsgaard and Poulsen , could have taken the lead, but Petrovic twice prevented the goal – the first time, with the help of Mitrovic , clearing on the line.
The second half ended 0-0 and started with bad news for the visitors: Poulsen was injured and left early on. Towards the end, Vlahovic was also substituted with physical complaints, but not before forcing Schmeichel to stop the goal with a great shot with a spectacular flight. The Juventus forward , who had a bad start to the season, is in great form and, despite not being happy with the goal, was the most upset with the goalless draw, along with Al Hilal captain Mitrovic , the latter especially in the first half.
Serbia ‘s insistence was growing without any foresight and, on the counter-attack, Denmark preferred to pause rather than explore the opponent’s goal. The goalless draw was worth everything for the Danes, who, with the final whistle and already with one more player on the field – Pavlovic was sent off in the last minute – confirmed their presence in the quarter-finals of the Nations League .
