FIFA is already testing and may even move forward with an alternative to VAR that will revolutionize football
The organization is studying the Football Video Support (FVS) system
What if football coaches could use a ‘contest’ like what happens in basketball, for example? This is an option that is being seriously considered by FIFA, which hopes to obtain approval from the Board of Directors to continue testing the Football Video Support (FVS) system, an alternative to VAR, which allows coaches to challenge referee decisions at least once a year. twice per game.
The idea will not be to replace the current VAR model and tests are being carried out to see if the technology can be useful in competitions that want to use it but do not have the means to have VAR. FIFA has 211 members and, in most competitions in different countries, there are no means or conditions that allow the existence of VAR.
With FVS, the presence of a video referee would not be necessary, with coaches’ ‘contests’ dictating the use of technology.
The system, approved by the International Football Association Board in March, was trialled this year at the U17 and U20 Women’s World Cups.
“The experiences of these two competitions will be analyzed carefully, but so far we have not noticed anything unexpected,” explained former referee Pierluigi Colina, now head of FIFA’s refereeing committee.
The entity that governs world football must now present a report to the Board of Directors, which will decide whether the experiment can be extended, with several leagues already expressing interest in hosting tests.
