Lionel Messi named MLS Player of the Season
Argentine received 38.43% of the votes, just 4.73% more than the runner-up
Despite being eliminated in the first round of the play-offs , Inter Miami finished first in the regular phase of the Eastern Confederation Championship, winning the Supporters’ Shield and breaking the MLS single-season points record.
One of the main people responsible for this was Lionel Messi , who, despite being injured for some time, was the second best scorer (17 goals), only behind Benteke (20), and the best assist maker (17 assists), in just 19 games.
This Friday, the North American league announced the winner of the award for the best player of the season and, unsurprisingly, it was the Argentine who received it. The former Barcelona player received 38.43% of the votes, with 43.2% coming from the media, 40.83% from the players and 31.25% from the clubs.
Columbus Crew’s Cucho Hernández was the only one who seriously competed for the award, coming in second with 33.7% of the votes. His team ended up being eliminated in the second round of the playoffs , precisely by the New York Red Bulls, who will play the final against LA Galaxy, this Saturday.
