Real Madrid draws with Rayo Vallecano and misses the chance to overtake Barcelona
Unai López, Mumin and Palazón scored for the home team, while Valverde, Bellingham and Rodrygo scored for the Madrid team
Real Madrid makes a great comeback, but falters and misses a chance
Real Madrid showed a strong reaction, but not enough to leave Vallecas with three points and provisional leadership, this Saturday, in the 17th round of the Spanish Championship. They were losing 2-0 and playing very poorly, but turned it around to 3-2 at the start of the second half. The problem was that the defense, which had not been playing well, slacked off once again, and the game ended 3-3. Unai López, Mumin and Palazón scored for the home team, while Valverde, Belingham and Rodrygo scored for the Madrid team. With the setback, Real Madrid remained in second place, a position they could lose this Sunday if Atlético de Madrid beat Getafe.
Despite having controlled possession (69%), Real Madrid were inferior for almost the entire first half. Palazón and De Frutos were a constant threat in the build-up, and the home team ended up taking a 2-0 lead with headers scored by Unai López in the fourth minute and Mumin in the 35th. In the end, Real reacted. When Rayo’s defense was in place, Valverde broke it with a powerful shot from outside the area. And in the 44th minute, Bellingham tied the score with a header.
Real Madrid came back stronger after the break and pushed the home side back into their own half. Rodrygo, who had been the best player in the first half, received the ball near the box, fooled Ciss and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot. The ball deflected off Ratiu and beat goalkeeper Batalla. Despite coming back strong, Ancelotti’s team quickly conceded the equaliser, and after a defensive slouch, Palazón levelled the scores.
Real decides the Intercontinental on Wednesday
Real Madrid’s next match is the Intercontinental Cup final, which will be held next Wednesday at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar at 2pm (Brasília time). The opponent will be Pachuca, who eliminated Al-Ahly on penalties after a goalless draw in normal time.
Rodrygo on the rise
After some physical problems, Rodrygo was the star of Real Madrid’s comeback against Rayo Vallecano. In addition to carrying his team forward with dribbling, he crossed for Bellingham’s goal and scored his own with a beautiful left-footed shot.
