Wolverhampton lose to Ipswich in stoppage time
Doherty scores an own goal for the home side, the Brazilian equalises and Taylor brings victory to the visitors in the 16th round
SUMMARY
Wolverhampton lost to Ipswich Town 2-1 this Saturday at Molineaux. In the 16th round of the Premier League, Doherty scored an own goal and Matheus Cunha equalised for the home side with his eighth goal of the season. However, Jack Taylor secured the victory in the final minutes. The teams remain in the same position in the relegation zone: Wolverhampton in 19th, with 9 points, and Ipswich in 18th, but now with 12 points.
DESPITE THE DEFEAT…
Matheus Cunha is enjoying a great phase in the Premier League, despite Wolverhampton’s poor performance in the competition. The Brazilian striker scored his eighth goal in the 24/25 season and extended his lead as the team’s top scorer – behind him is Larsen, with two fewer. Matheus is also at the top of the list of players with the most assists. He has three decisive passes and is tied for first place with Ait-Nouri and Lemina. In November, Cunha was among the finalists for the best player of the month in the English Premier League and in the race for the best goal, with three different plays.
HOW WAS THE GAME?
The first half was fairly even at Molineaux, but Ipswich had few chances to score. In the 14th minute, Chaplin received a loose ball just outside the penalty area and sent it towards goal. The defenders struggled to stop the shot, and the ball ended up hitting Doherty and ending up in the back of the net . Wolverhampton came back stronger after the break and put on a lot of pressure. Matheus Cunha was the one who levelled the scores in the 28th minute of the second half. Gonçalo Guedes, who had just come on, received the ball on the right, carried it into the middle and found the number 10 free on the left of the area.
The Brazilian struck a powerful cross to level the score. The home team still had more chances, but were unable to extend their lead. Following the classic saying “if you don’t score, you concede”, Ipswich knew how to take advantage of their opportunity. In the last play of injury time, from Jack to Jack: Clarke took the corner, and Taylor headed the winner.
