Garcia open to Courtois returning to Belgium: “He’s the best in the world”

This Friday, Rudi Garcia was announced as Domenico Tedesco’s successor as Belgium coach and one of the topics discussed at the press conference was the possibility of Thibaut Courtois returning to the squad in March.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper had a disagreement with the former coach and, as a result, stated that he would not return to the national team until the German left his post. That happened exactly a week ago and the Spaniard addressed the issue.

“I can’t reveal everything that has happened recently. The signing was actually finalised yesterday [Wednesday]. We spoke about it with Vincent Mannaert [sporting director]. I’m counting on great players like Thibaut ,” he revealed, recalling that he has other great goalkeepers at his disposal.

“We have quality in goal [ Sels and Casteels ], but when you have the best goalkeeper in the world, who is Belgian, it is good to have him with us. Thibaut will have the opportunity to express himself. We will see what the near future holds for us,” he concluded.

Courtois has 102 caps for Belgium and has not played since 17 June 2023, when he started in the home match against Austria (1-1), in the Euro 2024 qualifying round.
