Injured for two years, former Barcelona prospect cancels contract in Italy: “It goes beyond biology”
Three-time Spanish champion and Europa League winner Gerard Deulofeu leaves Udinese
Once considered one of Spain’s greatest prospects, Gerard Deulofeu has not stepped onto a pitch since January 22, 2023. Since then, the best player at the 2012 European Under-19 Championship has been through a real ordeal.
This Thursday, one week away from reaching exactly two years without playing, the 30-year-old Spanish international winger announced the termination of his contract with Udinese , the Italian club he has represented since 2020, as he could no longer handle the fight he has been fighting against his own body.
“I have been fighting for two years against something that goes beyond biology. I am better now than I was a few months ago, but we will see what happens. I have always had an incredible relationship with the club. The fact that Udinese waited for me is very valuable,” said the player who ruptured his cruciate ligaments two years ago and suffered a cartilage infection after the operation.
“If I ever play again, it will undoubtedly be with this shirt, for this club and these people who have always helped me. We have reached an agreement to terminate our contract, but the relationship and support remain special,” added the player.
Deulofeu has three Spanish championships under his belt, won while playing for Barcelona , and a Europa League won while playing for Sevilla .
