Mourinho went crazy with the referee’s decision
Portuguese coach says Simone Sozza influenced the result by not sending off Kumbedi
Fenerbahçe are still not guaranteed a place in the UEFA Europa League play-offs after being held to a goalless draw by Lyon . José Mourinho ran to the referee to protest at the end and told reporters that Simone Sozza had a clear influence on the result.
“There were two incorrect red cards in the match. Kumbedi ’s tackle on Szymanski is a clear red card. The referee made a wrong decision and the VAR did not correct it. Then he gave an incorrect red card to Niakhaté, but then the VAR made the right decision and said it was only a yellow card. Then the same Kumbedi grabbed Szymanski ’s throat , brought him down to stop a quick attack, but the referee did not give him a yellow card and did not send him off. The referee had a big influence on the match, that is clear,” he said.
Nevertheless, José Mourinho is convinced that Fenerbahçe will reach the next stage: «I believe that a draw will be enough to advance to the play-offs. We lost Bright Osayi-Samuel and Amrabat , but we have to fight to stay in Europe.»
But the refereeing dominated the conference and when he returned to the subject, the coach returned to his criticism: «The VAR is there to help the referee. I can accept the referee’s mistake, but the VAR should not make mistakes like this. Kumbedi took Szymanski to the ground like any UFC fighter.»
