Reminder: never have so many players changed clubs in one calendar year
Almost 80 thousand athletes transferred in 2024, which meant a sum of just over 8 billion euros; women’s football also broke records
2024 was a record-breaking year when it comes to the transfer market. According to FIFA, never before have so many players changed clubs in the same calendar year, therefore, during the winter and summer markets of 2024.
78,742 professional and international athletes embarked on a new adventure last year, with a total spending of just over €8 billion. This was the second highest amount ever in a single year, with only the previous year having seen more, at just over €9 billion. Naturally, England was the country that contributed the most as a buyer, and Brazil the biggest seller.
In relation to women’s football, in this market we have already seen the biggest transfer in history, which exceeded one million euros: Naomi Girma, an American defender who joined Chelsea , coming from the San Diego Wave, in MLS.
However, this market does not count towards these values, and in 2024 women’s football naturally continued to grow: 2,284 transfers were made, that is, an increase of 20.8% compared to 2023. Last year, practically R$15 million, more than double the year before this.
