Shakhtar defeats Brest and remains alive in the fight for a place in the round of 16
Ukrainian team dominates Champions League debutants and takes victory with goals from Kevin and Sudakov
THE DREAM IS ALIVE!
Shakhtar Donetsk needed to win in the seventh round of the Champions League to continue dreaming of a spot in the next phase of the competition and they did just that. The club with the most Brazilians in the tournament defeated Brest at home, 2-0, with goals from Kevin and Sudakov. Now, the Ukrainian team is in 27th place, with seven points, and can qualify for the playoffs in the next match. Eric Roy’s team, on the other hand, is further away from the G-8 with the defeat and is in 11th place, without a direct spot but with a chance of making it to the knockout stages.
CONCERN FOR THE LAST ROUND
Shakhtar lost one of its starters during Wednesday’s match: Eguinaldo. The Brazilian number 7 felt pain in his right thigh during a sprint to attack and immediately asked to leave the match. He limped off and could miss the last game, which will be decisive for Shakhtar’s survival in the competition.
HOW WAS THE GAME?
Shakhtar dominated the match from start to finish. The first ball hit the net in the 17th minute. Eguinaldo started a lightning counterattack with a long shot. Kevin believed in the ball, beat his marker, carried it into the box and hit the corner. In the final stretch of the first half, in the 36th minute, Azarovi was brought down inside the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Sudakov stepped up to take the shot and scored with style, with a chip. Brest even tried to react after the break, but it was too late. The French club had a few dangerous chances, but they were all stopped by Riznyk’s good saves.
