Transfer Market: Niko Kovac takes over as Dortmund coach
Croatian coach succeeds Nuri Sahin, confirmed Lars Ricken, sporting director of the Germans
Nico Kovac has been chosen by Borussia Dortmund to succeed Nuri Sahin as the club’s coach.
“We have reached an agreement in principle with Niko Kovac. He will take over the team on Sunday,” said Lars Ricken, the German team’s sporting director, in statements to DAZN.
The 53-year-old Croatian coach is preparing to return to action after leaving Wolfsburg . Kovac coached Wolfsburg between 2022 and 2024 and won the German Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2018, in a final against Bayern , who he would later coach. With the Bavarians, he won the Bundesliga , Cup and Super Cup in 2018/19. The coach also has spells with the Croatian national team and on the bench of Monaco
Borussia Dortmund , one of Sporting ‘s possible opponents in the play-off for access to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 , is in 11th place in the Bundesliga , 22 points behind leaders Bayern .
